Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 30, 2026
The short version: you do not need an account, and without one there is nobody to profile. An optional account — email address, first name and last initial — exists only for backing up your settings and for shared lists. Matching happens on your phone. Location sent to the server to look up nearby stores is used for that one request and never logged, stored, or attached to you. Nothing is sold to anyone, ever.
Overview
Roaminder is built with privacy as a core principle. Your location is sent to our server only to fetch nearby stores, processed in real-time, and immediately discarded — never logged, stored, or tied to your identity. We do not share or sell your personal information to anyone, ever.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Shopping list items: Names of products you add to your list. These are sent to our server to match against store product categories and are not retained after the request completes.
- Account details, if you create an account: An account is optional and nothing else in Roaminder requires one — it exists so you can back up your settings and use shared lists. If you create one we store your email address, your first name, and your last initial. There is no password; we email you a six-digit code each time you sign in.
- Your backup, if you use it: With an account you can back up your custom lists, settings, store preferences, hidden and reported stores, exclusion zones, saved 8‑Ball experiences and automatic reminder schedules. Your current shopping list is deliberately excluded. The backup is stored as written by the app so it can be restored onto a new phone; we do not read inside it.
- Shared lists: If you create or join a shared list we store the list's name, its items, any notes written on them, and who claimed or completed what. Everyone on a list appears as a first name and last initial — "Dana R." — and never more than that. Someone opening a shared link in a web browser gives only that name: no email address and no account.
1.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Feedback you choose to send: If you use Send Feedback in Settings, the message you write is stored on our server so we can read and act on it. Your app version and phone model are sent with it so we can match the report to a build, along with your anonymous device identifier so we can spot repeated reports. This is the only thing in the App that we keep after a request finishes. We ask you not to include personal details in the message, and we do not want them. Feedback is kept until we delete it, and it is never shared or sold.
- Anonymous device identifier: A randomly generated ID used to communicate with our server. This ID cannot be traced back to you, your device, or any personal information.
- Approximate location: When you grant location permission, your coordinates are used on-device to determine which stores are nearby. Coordinates sent to our server for store matching are not logged or stored.
1.3 Information We Do NOT Collect
- Names or contact details, unless you choose to create an account — and then only your email address, first name and last initial
- Passwords — there are none to steal, because we never set any
- Precise location history or movement patterns
- Device information beyond what is necessary for the app to function
- Browsing history or activity outside the App
- Financial or payment information
- Social media profiles or contacts
2. How We Use Your Information
| Data | Purpose | Stored on server? |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping list items | Match items to store categories | No — processed in real-time only |
| Location coordinates | Identify nearby stores | No — sent ephemerally, never logged or stored |
| Device identifier | Associate requests during a session | No personal data attached |
| Email address | Send your sign-in code; identify your account | Yes — only if you create an account |
| First name and last initial | Show who claimed what on a shared list | Yes — only if you create an account or join a shared list |
| Settings backup | Restore your setup onto a new phone | Yes — only if you use backup |
| Shared list contents | Show the list to the people you shared it with | Yes — until the list expires or is deleted |
3. Location Data
3.1 On-Device Processing
Your location data is processed entirely on your device for proximity alerts. The App checks your position against known store locations locally — this never requires sending your continuous location to any server.
3.2 Server Requests
When the App fetches nearby store data, your approximate location is sent to our server to return relevant results. This data is:
- Used only for the duration of that single request
- Not logged, stored, or associated with any identifier
- Not shared with any third party
3.3 Background Location
If you grant "Allow all the time" permission, the App periodically checks your location on-device against stored points of interest. This processing happens entirely on your phone. No location data is sent to any server during background checks.
3.4 No Location Tracking
We do not track your movements. We do not build location profiles. We do not maintain location histories. Your location data is ephemeral — used in the moment to check for nearby stores, then immediately discarded.
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with any third party.
The only data transmitted from the App is:
- Shopping list item names (for store matching)
- Approximate location (for nearby store lookup)
Both are processed in real-time and discarded. No third party receives your data.
4.1 Advertising
The App may display advertisements. Ad networks may collect anonymized, non-personal interaction data (such as whether an ad was viewed) in accordance with their own privacy policies. We do not provide these networks with your location, shopping list, or any identifying information.
5. Data Storage and Security
5.1 Local Storage
Your shopping lists, preferences, settings, and proximity data are stored locally on your device using standard mobile storage mechanisms. This data is not backed up to any cloud service by the App.
5.2 Server Security
Our store-matching server processes requests without storing personal data. Server communications use encrypted connections (HTTPS).
5.3 Data Retention
Without an account we retain nothing about you. Shopping list items and location are processed for a single request and discarded; the only exception is feedback you deliberately send, described in 1.2.
If you do use the optional account features:
- Your account and backup are kept until you delete the account. Deleting it removes the account, the backup, and any lists you own, immediately and permanently.
- Sign-in codes expire after 15 minutes and can be used once.
- Shared lists expire on their own. Thirty days after the last activity a list becomes read-only; thirty days after that it is deleted along with its items, notes and the record of who claimed what. Any activity resets the clock, so a list in use never expires.
6. Your Rights and Choices
6.1 Location Permission
You can revoke location permission at any time through your device's Settings. The App will continue to function for list management, but proximity features will be unavailable.
6.2 Notifications
You can disable notifications at any time through the App's settings or your device's system settings.
6.3 Data Deletion
Almost everything Roaminder knows lives on your phone, so you can remove it yourself at any time by clearing the App's data in your device settings, or by uninstalling the App.
If you created an account, that lives on our server and is deleted separately: Settings › Account › Delete my account. That removes your account, your backup and any shared lists you own, permanently and straight away. It does not touch anything on your phone, which stays exactly as it is. You do not need to contact us and we do not ask why.
Signing out instead of deleting leaves your account and backup intact and simply disconnects this phone from them.
6.4 Opt-Out
You can opt out of any data collection by simply not granting location permission. The App will still function as a shopping list manager.
7. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information is collected about you
- Request deletion of your personal information
- Opt out of the sale of your personal information
Since we do not collect, store, or sell personal information, these rights are already satisfied by our data practices.
